Planthoppers are caught back up. Treehoppers next.

I made all the Superfamily references down to genus level all link to their respective information pages.

I believe I have the leafhoppers updated. Planthoppers are next.

More work for you : )
Just to make trouble, why don't you create links to the info page of every genus? For instance:
Genus Acinopterus.

....
I thought about doing that actually. I had seen it requested on John's midge article.
You say "every" genus. Do you mean every hopper genus on BugGuide or just the ones I have in the article?

Thanks Beatriz.

Oh!
I meant the ones in the article.
This may turn out to be some kind of overview or you may use it as one eventually. Huge job!

Well....
You're right. It does look very similar and could be made into that. And yes, it would be a big job....but an overview of these critters needs to be done though, right?

Let me get it back up to speed with my stuff and then I'll look into the other.
But, I'm not an editor so I don't have access to changing or adding to the info pages. How would that work? Just reference this article? Or do it as an article then one of you guys copy it over?

Or, leave this one alone and copy and paste for a new one, with everything else included in it?

As I said elsewhere
You can do it as an article. I did just that with Overview of insects to avoid cluttering the info page. I just put a link to the article on the info page. It works just as well.
If there are good reasons to put it on the info page you could copy and paste the article and e-mail it to one of the editors (me, for instance) willing to put it on the info page. Would you be doing just one family? Probably Cicadellidae is the one that needs it the most with such large number of genera. But, then again you may prefer to tackle a smaller group.

....
FYI, I realize I need to revise and add to this and am planning on doing it. I just have to find time....hopefully soon.

Don't know if you can get a hold of this paper...
at your local university library, but it seems to have a list of numerous treehoppers found in Oklahoma (albeit a while ago). Perhaps a useful addition to this article. It would give you and others a target list of additional species that you might be able to find...

Observations on Treehopper Behavior (Homoptera, Membracidae)
Clifford J. Dennis
American Midland Naturalist, Vol. 71, No. 2 (Apr., 1964), pp. 452-459

Abstract
Observations were made on one or more aspects of the behavior of 36 species at Lake Itasca, Minnesota, and Ada, Oklahoma, 1960-62. The treehoppers did not show decided preference for any particular height or for the "shady" or "sunny" side of trees. No daily vertical migration was detected. Thirty-two of 77 Enchenopa binotata responded to lights, more so to either white or black than to various colors. Thirteen species came to both black and white light traps, three to a black light trap only, four to a white light trap only. A discussion of observations on righting, response to mechanical stimuli, protective coloration and shape, resting time, feeding, minor movements, and defecation is included.

Yes
That's a great idea! I'll see what I can do. Thanks!

Revised....
Added to Genus Erythroneura with Eratoneura basilaris (Erythroneura basilaris).

Done....
I think this is finished. Take a look and see if you see anything wrong.

Nice work
Nice work Sam. We need more things like this.

One thing you might check: genus Gyponana under both Cicadellidae and Membracidae.

You're right....
I had a leafhopper in with the treehoppers. It's fixed now. Thanks for the correction, I appreciate it.

Good work!
This looks good enough for an article. I would suggest that you include the scientific names for Fleahoppers, etc.
Links for Planthoppers #3 and Treehoppers #3 don't work.
Genus and species are always in italics.

....
Genus and species italics done.

Ok
is there a way to move this to Articles or do I just copy the text/code and create an Article topic, paste the text/code into it, then delete this one ?

Moving Forum topics
Click "edit" on the original Forum post, then look for where it shows the name of the forum. If you click on that, you should get a menu of all the forums. Just select "Articles" and it will be moved to that forum when you click "Submit"

That said, there's a lot of overlap between Photo Focus Groups and Articles. Anything that involves asking people to contribute images on a particular subject fits under Photo Focus Groups. The first Photo Focus Group entry is basically an article on Hornets and Yellowjackets.

If you're using this to coordinate efforts by others to document "Fleahoppers, Leafhoppers, Planthoppers, and Treehoppers of Oklahoma", then this is the right place. If you're just presenting the results of your own searches, then Articles would probably be better.

Ok....
Articles is probably where it should be then.

But then is this even a worthy endeavor ? I know it will help me but is it worth eating up server space for ?

Not that I'm in favor of wasting server space...
but Forum messages are text/html, which is pretty insignificant compared to the images. Thumbnails take up some bandwidth as people view the page, but you're just displaying what's already on the server elsewhere, so server space isn't an issue.

BugGuide is PHP-based, which means that everything you see is assembled into HTML by the server from information in different tables- "/node/view/158091" doesn't correspond to a spot on the server, for instance. The server interprets it as a request for it to put together and send a web page using records in several tables that have "158091" in their node id field.

I would say the main concerns would be clutter (from site-visitors' point of view), and bandwidth- with the bandwidth of even the hugest collection of thumbnails being equivalent to perhaps a couple of pages of ID Request: not a serious issue except to site visitors on dial-up.

Given that active topics move ahead of inactive ones in the listings, your topic will quickly disappear from view if people don't find it interesting enough to comment on- so clutter isn't that much of an issue, either.

So,
basically the server is image and code storage....correct ?

I guess though what I'm really trying to get at is how do you know if an idea for an article is actually worthy of doing ?
When should you create an article and when should you not ?

I guess I assumed articles were mainly by experts....which I am not.

Articles, Photo Focus
After seeing Tony's articles in the Photo Focus Group it doesn't seem to make much difference where yours goes.
Also don't feel intimidated by the professionalism of some of the articles (in either forum). One of the earliest articles was done by a high schooler. He received a lot of generous and well intentioned editorial feedback with corrections and suggestions that helped him polish his article. So it helps to be receptive to comments and you will end up learning a lot in the process as well as developing a fine piece with all that help.

The problem with those links...
seems to be that they're missing "http://", so browsers assume it's on the same website.

....
Links fixed.
