Possible swallowtail butterfly - Papilio cresphontes

Possible swallowtail butterfly - Papilio cresphontes
Perth, Ferguson Falls, Lanark, Ontario, Canada
August 28, 2018
Size: 3" ±
There were 3-4 of these "swallowtails" flitting about. They were "old" with their wings showing sign of wear. A couple of them still had parts of their "tail"

Swallowtail ID
Thanks Larry. Guess that confirms it. (Agriculture Canada website says they are common in SW Ont and one showed up in Ottawa in 1992 (And a few in Manitoba at some point as well). If that website is up to date, it seems a few more have appeared this year in Ottawa

Giant swallowtail sightings
If you go over to e-butterfly.org and get a map for Ontario sightings (I don't think you need to sign up to do this) you'll find lots of Ottawa area records. The Ag. Can. site may be out of date.

Swallowtail ID
Thanks Larry. You're right - lots of sightings

Swallowtail ID
I have had a possible ID as a Giant Swallowtail, but they aren't normally seen in the area I found them. They are normally seen in SW Ontario and US.

Giant Swallowtail
Jim, this species has become common in eastern Ontario in the past 5 years. We get them frequently at our place in Almonte. If you have prickly ash near by you should keep seeing them.

Swallowtail ID
Thanks Ken. Not sure why I haven't seen them before. Guess I don't get out to Almonte and Ferguson Falls enough, or at least not at the right time of year.
