Can he turn red? - Tenodera angustipennis - male

Can he turn red? - Tenodera angustipennis - Male
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
August 30, 2018
Saw this guy scaling a brick wall and noticed he had some redish spots on him, presumably to blend in with the wall? Is the subject actually able to turn a brownish red? Just curious. I've never seen them any color outside of green/tan/brown

Tenodera angustipennis
Coloration of pronotum in this species is typically uniformly green or brownish. Green phase individuals may have violet/reddish-brown shading along dorsal median of pronotum and costal ridge of forewings. Pigmentation may change somewhat in between nymphal molts but remains constant as an adult, i.e. they have no ability to alter their color once they are adults aside from signs of normal aging and UV saturation. Brick walls and the like are artificial substrates that mantises may be found upon through the course of their movement to find food/select mates. These are transient resting locations/obstacles and are not natural biological niches. As such, mantises do not adapt their behavior or color to match said obstacles, as they do not remain at such locations for very long-- for, if they did, they would likely starve to death and/or lead out a lonely existence apart from a conspecific mate. Thus, the body pigmentation matching the bricks is merely coincidence and nothing more.

Moved
Moved from Tenodera.

Tenodera
This is an adult male Tenoderan. Whether it is T.sinensis or T. angustipennis I couldn't tell you. Both species are present in your area.

Out of curiosity how can you
Out of curiosity how can you tell that it is a male? Size?

Male
It is slim and the antennae of males are much longer relative to females. By this time of year females are often gravid, heavy with eggs.
