Mantispid (Climaciella brunnea or something else?) - Climaciella brunnea

Mantispid (Climaciella brunnea or something else?) - Climaciella brunnea
Billings, MT, Yellowstone County, Montana, USA
September 2, 2018
I had no idea these guys were in southern MT! Mantispids are one of my favorite insects, however I don't know much about the insect's species' distributions. Do all C. brunnea populations mimic Polistes exclamans or just those from the southern U.S.? The wasp mantidflies that have been found in MT seem to be mimicking some other Polistes species, no? If so, which one?

Yes
There is only one species of Mantidfly with the thick band on the wings. = Climaciella brunnea
Out west, Polistes aurifer might seem to be more scary:

Thank you!
Appreciate your feedback, Bob! Thanks a bunch. Good to know about the wing band.
