Soldier Fly (Stratiomyidae)
Either Hermetia or Hoplitimyia. We've had an unusually cold weather here in Western Europe too (nights below freezing point before november, which had not occured for at least 20 yrs). What about so-called global "warming"?

Soldier fly?
Interesting creature. Nice finds/posts today, Tom. Glad you're where it's warm enough to shoot.

Ron, this trip was a complete disaster. Every thing you see here was hard work. Temps were around 45 degrees with a constant drizzle. I had half a morning of sun. Normal highs are mid 70s to low 80s. I should have come back with 100 species of butterflies...that is NEW species. I have maybe 15.

Sorry to hear that, but...
results are even more impressive in light of the difficulties. Sounds like a great place to shoot, weather permitting. (I'd thought your photos looked fine, yet a bit different from the norm, primarily from the standpoint of less selective focusing.)
