crabronid - Ectemnius decemmaculatus

crabronid - Ectemnius decemmaculatus
Rockville, Montgomery County, Maryland, USA
September 4, 2018
Size: body 12mm
I think this is an Ectemnius but I haven’t been able to take it any further. One of the abdominal sternites seems highly distorted on both sides. Strepsipterans?
TIA

Strepsipterans - no
Strepsipterans have never been found on this genus or any related genera. For some reason the sternum of this individual has popped out. Maybe a close encounter with a predator.

Thanks Ken
How do you tell the difference between these 2 genera?

I don't attempt to.
I leave that to the experts. :)

thanks but now I'm really confused
Who was the expert who made the ID? You're the only editor who left a comment

You're quite right to be confused--and it's my fault.
I just noticed that I dropped these in Crabro by mistake. I was shooting for Crabronina--and will correct the mistake immediately. Sorry about that--and thanks for commenting so I could correct the error!

no problem at all
Confusion is a way of life for me anyway :-)
