Symphyta (Sawfly) cocoon? - Neodiprion compar

Symphyta (Sawfly) cocoon? - Neodiprion compar
Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida, USA
September 7, 2018
Size: Length ≈7mm
I missed the end of the story: The larva continued resting on a pine needle after I had taken its picture but I was never sure whether it fed of it; tiny black objects on the jar's bottom may have been dirt or frass. On September 6 all that was left was what appeared to be its crumpled dry skin, and on the bottom of the jar I noticed a cocoon. On Sept. 7 I tried to remove the cocoon for photo taking but it stuck firmly to the glass bottom of the jar. I took a picture in situ and covered the jar again with nylon tulle. When I inspected the photo in the evening I was surprised to realize that the occupant of the cocoon had left it. I am mystified.
