Curlew Lake, 10 miles northeast of Republic, Ferry County, Washington, USA
June 12, 2007
Photographed near Curlew Lake, ~10 miles Northeast of Republic, ~20 Miles south of the Canadian Border, ~150 miles east of the Cascade mountains, ~2100 ft in elevation.

It is Euphydryas anicia
This is the subspecies hopfingeri.

There has been a lot of confusion in recent decades, because some authors have lumped Euphydryas chalcedona and E. anicia together and dubbed the resultant hodge-podge the "Variable Checkerspot"

Moved from Variable Checkerspot.

Yes.
Likely E. chalcedona. Not called the "variable checkerspot" for no good reason:-)

looks like a northwest versio
looks like a northwest version of a variable checkerspot--euphydryas chalcedona, based on Kaufman's field guide to Butterflies of North America (Brock & Kaufman).
