Tiny Rove Beetle Under Bark -
Sepedophilus
Near Ruraldale, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA
April 12, 2005
Size: Circa 3 mm
Very tiny, very fast-moving. My best try for genus is Conosomus, although Coproporus is similar. Any help with ID appreciated.

Staphylinidae: Tachyporinae: Sepedophilus sp.
The classical habitat for this genus is beneath bark of dead trees. Conosoma was placed as a junior synonym of Sepedophilus some time ago.

Thanks
Donald, Thanks for the ID and for updating my terminology. I use Dillon & Dillon a lot and have the bad habit of forgetting to check the names on-line for changes. It's good to put a name on this one.

Sepedophilus and Coprophorus
I forgot to add this the other day. A useful character is that Sepedophilus is evenly covered by quite distinct, though short, setae, giving it a muted/dull appearance. Both Cilea and Coproporus are quite glistening/glabrous dorsally. There are images of both I think on BugGuide.
