Acmaeops proteus on Douglas Fir - Anastrangalia

Acmaeops proteus on Douglas Fir - Anastrangalia
6 miles NW Lyons, Boulder County, Colorado, USA
July 9, 2009
Size: BL ~12 mm
This handsome red and black longhorn was photographed on a Douglas Fir in the CO foothills at about 6400' elevation. Its abdomen barely shows beneath the elytra. I am posting another individual whose abdomen is prominent. If my identification is correct, it will be the first BG submission from CO. However, it is listed in at least 15 counties in A Survey of the Cerambycidae (Coleoptera), or Longhorn Beetles of Colorado by Daniel Heffern, 1998. Please advice if my identification is incorrect. Thank you.

Moved
Moved from Acmaeops proteus.

The genus is Anastrangalia...
This is a female Anastrangalia, most likely A. sanguinea, but it's possible that A. haldemani is present in this area as well. I'll dig in further and see if I can verify sanguinea...

Another question
May I ask you another question? I also named BG # 1592946 as Acmaeops proteus. A similar beetle but a different date and plant Was I correct in this identification? or is this longhorn also genus Anastrongalia? There are so many lookalikes out there! Thank you.

Working on this one...
This is also an Anastrangalia, but I wanted to resolve the first one before seeing if I can sort this one out. Yes - there are a number of species having this gestalt, and Acmaeops seems to be one of the genera commonly involved in the mixups. The characteristic feature for Acmaeops is the somewhat flattened pronotal disk with the posterior angles developed into broad tubercles - see a good view of this in image # 601912. Gnathacmaeops has the pronotum convex and not flattened, and Anastrangalia has the pronotum cylindrical and narrower apically than basally with the side margins fairly straight.

Also Anastrangalia
Thank you so much for looking at this longhorn also. I especially am happy to learn how to tell the differences between these three lookalike genera. Your help is really appreciated.

Anastrangalia
Thank you so much for correcting my mistaken identification. I look forward to learning about Anastrangalia and the two species you mention. Your help is so appreciated.
