Dasylechia atrox
Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, USA
August 9, 2018
Found in our backyard where we have a 3 year old organic permaculture based vegetable, herb, fruit, nut and native plant garden with a large oak tree. It is a certified wildlife habitat and monarch ways station and has a new Italian bee apiary added in July 2018. Looked liked oversized bumblebee/carpenter bee but had this hornet in it's grasp. Image taken right before it flew off with it's cargo. Anyone have more information on this robber fly? I can't find much on it.

Beautiful shot
Still a rarity and was the rarest robber around until bugguide photogs, in about 2011 to 2013, started turning some up in the Great Lake states. Previously known from PA but I think over a 100 years went by with none seen before these bugguide records turned up. And the first shot here on this site was the first shot ever taken of this insect.
