Are there any other groups we can't rule out? Segmentation suggests an insect larva.

but the guide doesn't have any records of this family in that part of the country

 
There are also others: some coccinellidae, some Chrysomelidae
I would have imagined Psephenidae occur in Montana.

 
I would have too
but I can't come up with any records outside of the guide as well. What would be the terminal segment of a trilobite's pygidium is also the wrong shape for any psephenid larva I can find. Too bad the person who posted it hasn't included an email address on his profile page
