Rejected by bluegill - Neodiprion lecontei
Paoli, Orange County, Indiana, USA
September 18, 2018
Size: ~2.5cm
This 'horde' was in process of stripping bare a (P. resinosa) Red Pine (pretty sure) sapling. I shook some into the pond having bluegill; the fish tasted and spit out these larva. Wonder if birds also find them unpalatable, as the larva make no attempt to protect themselves (except coloration?).

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

This fact sheet, says that the larvae may "regurgitate a chemical sequestered from the pine needles in an attempt to thwart potential predators."
