Flying insect with fake big yellow “eyes” - Procloeon nelsoni
Bryant, Saline County, Arkansas, USA

Size: Tiny. Used macro lens 15x
I will add another picture that shows this insects small black eyes. After I took the first picture (which shows the black eyes), this insect moved the big fake yellow “eyes” to cover the real ones. I’ve never seen an insect like this before but I have only recently began taking macro pictures. Any information will be greatly appreciated 🙂

Procloeon nelsoni
Hi Mary-

I believe this male imago to be Procloeon nelsoni. Winged males of family Baetidae have (what is commonly referred to as) turbinate eyes. As stated above, they are certainly not fake.

Turbinate Eyes
Thank you! Mayflies are quite interesting; I read that male mayflies have 7 eyes. Again, thank you and I’m very happy I found this website.
