Bombardier beetle - Brachinus hirsutus

Bombardier beetle - Brachinus hirsutus
Cienega Creek, Pima County, Arizona, USA
December 2, 2007
Size: 1 cm
Found under rock along dry creek bed. As many as thirty individuals in a cluster. During capture the beetle defended itself with "pop" from back end with visible vapor cloud shooting out.

Moved tentatively; must be it
Moved from Bombardier Beetle.

Carabidae : Brachinus sp.
I only trust microscopic examination for separating species of Brachinus. That's especially true for several little-known species in southwest. Many species appear superficially alike until, for example, you look closely at ventral surface for the pattern of color and pubescence (hairs).

Nice!
What a nice shot! Nice to see your work here again, Jillian:-)
