Rainbow scarab - Phanaeus vindex - male

Rainbow scarab - Phanaeus vindex - Male
Yoakum Dunes Wildlife Management Area, Cochran County, Texas, USA
September 17, 2018
One of several live specimens rescued from a coffee can on September 16th - which originally held the plastic cup used as the pitfall trap - that had filled with rainwater. Unfortunately, about two dozen or so individuals had already drowned, the first of which initiated a snowball effect.

I have had the same scenario play out a couple times in the past with Nicrophorus beetles being drawn into pitfall traps en masse.

These photos were taken not at the WMA, but in my backyard.
