Eupeodes americanus/pomus ..... female
Eupeodes americanus/pomus .... female. This is a most interesting fly.
There is some yellow on the ridge at sides of abdomen and Syrphini with complete bands with edge of tergites partly yellow would be expected in Syphus but Syrphus is ruled out because there are no yellow hairs on the yellow portion of ridge markings on tergite 3 and 4, because on tergite 2 the yellow markings meet, because this has clear black marks on sternites which almost reach side margins of sternites and thorax is not bronzy with two greyish stripes on dorsum.
It is not Epistrophe grossulariae as suggested because it doesn't have a long black isosceles triangle from directly above the antennae to ocellar triangle and the antennae are not totally coal black and the yellow markings do not overlap side margins of tergites for the whole width of the markings.
Eupeodes latifasciatus doesn't have dark spots above the antennae or dust spots on the frons.
