wormlike grub, likely beetle

wormlike grub, likely beetle
Read's Landing, Wabasha County, Minnesota, USA
October 1, 2018
Size: 2 cm
Found deep in rotten hardwood log on ground (probably boxelder). It is mobile, pulling its body together, then stretching out. It can climb up plastic. The head normally is retracted, with only the tip of mouthparts protruding. It does not try to bite. Looks very much like an earthworm.
