Sandhills Gamelands leaf miner on Toxicodendron vernix D1207 2018 1 - Liriomyza schmidti

Sandhills Gamelands leaf miner on Toxicodendron vernix D1207 2018 1 - Liriomyza schmidti
Sandhills Gamelands near Hoffman, Richmond County, North Carolina, USA
October 4, 2018
This looks vaguely like either a Phyllocnistis or a Marmara?? not sure I believe either. I did not wish to sample this one, as it is poison sumac--so I just settled for photos.

On close inspection, I don't think these are gracillariid mines, and this seems to leave L. schmidti as the most likely explanation. It's not so far from Laurinburg, where we know that species occurs, and on reviewing my photos of L. schmidti mines, I think these are within the range of variation. It would be a new host family, but it's a very polyphagous fly... It would be good to confirm by rearing, if the opportunity arises, but I think this is worth mentioning in our paper as a likely L. schmidti host/distribution record.

Not anything that's known to occur on Toxicodendron...
I wish I could see the frass and/or that dead larva at the leaf margin more clearly. My first guess is Marmara; Phyllocnistis isn't totally out of the question; it seems too long and consistently narrow to be Liriomyza schmidti. If you can figure out a way to collect these, it would be worthwhile.

I'll see what I can do...
I'll see what I can do... Any advice on how to sample this plant (and send leaves) safely??
