If found 2 nights previous, shouldn't the date be Oct 8?

Good question
I asked about this when placing an ID request about a year ago and did not get a response. So I just stay consistent with the Guide instructions of listing the date the photo was taken.

 
Maybe, but I went back through several pages and looked at
pinned or pointed beetle photos (since they almost certainly were collected earlier than the day they were posted) and all had dates that were earlier than their posted dates. The guidelines that you read presumably assumed that a person had taken the photo in the wild rather than later.
