Black Swallowtail caterpillar - Papilio polyxenes

Black Swallowtail caterpillar - Papilio polyxenes
Chatham, Chatham-Kent, Ontario, Canada
October 12, 2018
I found 4 caterpillars in the garden today a little surprising considering the recent change in the weather from being in the 25-28C range a few days ago, to a high of only 8C today, and a risk of frost tonight. Three were good sized and should be pupating soon. One was surprisingly small, and still had a few days to go before getting to its overwintering stage. Three of them were on fennel, and a fourth was on the ground. Perhaps it felt a little more vulnerable but it clearly did not like being touched and chose to show off its defensive behaviour.
