Slug Caterpillar (?) ...maybe a Yellow-shouldered Slug Moth (Lithacodes fasciola) (??) [Compare vs. BG images 848590, 578648]
(Somewhat resembles some Tortoise Beetle larvae but among other differences it lacks anal fork/ fecal shield.)

Under investigation/ attack by Ants. Observed on trail alongside an intermittent stream through a mixed pine/ deciduous forest. Thanks for your help with ID.

Can't help on the caterpillar
But the ants are some sort of ponerine. EIther the smaller Hypoponera/Ponera or the larger Brachyponera chinensis.

Thanks Steven
Maybe the latter?...(Brachyponera chinensis) was previously identified at this location (BG image #1550053)

Brachyponera
Would make the most sense, since they more typically forage aboveground. Ponera and Hypoponera workers are rarely seen out in the open. They look shiny enough to be Brachyponera as well.
