Kuno scale - Eulecanium kunoense - female

Kuno scale - Eulecanium kunoense - Female
San Leandro, Alameda County, California, USA
March 31, 2005
Size: 2-6mm
I found 15+ of these on my neighbor's small apple tree. Sizes ranged from about 2-6mm. All of them very round. They were being attended by ants (False Honey Ant - Prenolepis imparis) that were drinking droplets of a clear substance from their sides.

Here is a photo of the ants with these scales.

Moved
Moved from Soft Scale Insects.

Scale?
My guess is that this is a mature female of a species of lecanium scale, a type of soft scale. There are a few different genera - Parthenolecanium, Neolecanium, Mesolecanium, and Eulecanium. If I find anything more, I'll let you know.
