Square-headed Wasp - Trypoxylon

Square-headed Wasp - Trypoxylon
Cupertino, Lower Stevens Creek, Santa Cruz Mtns, Santa Clara County, California, USA
October 26, 2018
I find these all-black wasps on foliage (blackberry spp, stinging nettle, mule fat) and on wet rocks. They zip around and remind me of skinny grains of wild rice when they settle, which they occasionally do for a second or two.

Would like to know how you id gender.
