small springtime bee - Halictus confusus

small springtime bee - Halictus confusus
Chattahoochie Park, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
April 24, 2018
Size: 8 mm
This bee was gathering pollen from snow trillium flower. It had light stripes on its abdomen, but was otherwise very similar in coloration to a smaller nearby bee. I will include another image of the smaller bee beside this one too.

Halictus confusus
Thanks for confirming the ID on this sweat bee, John!

Halictus
Both bees in your photo are sweat bees, but those bands of hair distinguish it from the smaller Lasioglossum subgenus Dialictus. Two metallic species in your area - Halictus confusus or tripartitus. An expert may be able to tell you which.

Cropping the photos closer to just the bee will allow us to see important characteristics easier.

sweat bees
Thanks so much for your help at identifying these two sweat bees, Molly. I am slowly working to document as many different bees, and other bugs, that live in Winneshiek County Iowa, but I'm not an entomologist so I really appreciate your expertise! I will crop the bees and other bugs closer in any future submissions.
