thick-headed fly - Myopa clausa

thick-headed fly - Myopa clausa

Size: 7 mm
I think this thick-headed fly is in genus Myopa, but I'm curious if there is enough detail here to determine the species.

Nice
to have a species name!
I see similar ones on Wild Geranium most years.

They are a really neat little fly, MJ! I'm trying to build up a data base of the bugs we have here in Winneshiek County, so I'm working to ID the different species that I capture with my camera.

Except ..
my images haven't been taken to species and I don't know enough to determine.

I just tried BG advanced search for the county but there were too many entries so it didn't work. That would have been helpful.

If you search under my name, you can at least see the photos that I've submitted to BugGuide, MJ. Some things have been taken to species but many have not. I'm just going through my photos taken this past summer, so I'll be posting more stuff that I can't ID myself as the winter goes on.

Moved from ID Request.

Thanks for nailing down the ID on this colorful little thick-headed fly, John!
