Cecidomyiidae, Lonicera

Cecidomyiidae, Lonicera
JT Property, King County, Washington, USA
September 29, 2018
Dr. Gagne taught me to look for opposing mandibles and a well-defined, rounded head on unidentified larvae associated with cecidomyiid galls. The presence of opposing mandibles and large rounded head indicates that the larva in question is something other than a cecidomyiid larva. Given that the larva in this example also lacks legs and is living singly inside a cecidomyiid gall, it is most likely a parasitoid of the gallmaker (or a hyperparasitoid).
