Lomachaeta cirrhomeris - male

Lomachaeta cirrhomeris - Male
Ash Mountain, 2800' elev., Tulare County, California, USA
June 8, 1985
Size: ca. 5 mm.
The male is all black except for the red tegulae and femurs.

Very nice
This species and the other Lomachaeta recently posted are very interesting in their distribution. This one is widespread in the southwest, but hardly ever collected. It is very interesting that it is able to occur in both the deserts in eastern California and the southern part of the central valley. Very few mutillid species are found on both sides of the Sierra Nevada and other connecting mountain ranges.

I've found them nectaring on
I've found them nectaring on mat forming Euphobias. If you don't see any on top, just lift the plant and see who's hiding underneath. The plants often don't look like much, but there are a lot of small Hymenoptera that visit them, especially in the desert environments.
