Oxycarenus? - Oxycarenus hyalinipennis

Oxycarenus? - Oxycarenus hyalinipennis
Palms, Los Angeles , Los Angeles County, California, USA
November 24, 2018
I found this (and a second one) on the back of a mallow leaf (Family Malvaceae). I’ve been having trouble trying to ID it. It has some white on its back legs (a little on the middle ones as well).

We don't have any Oxycarenus specimens from the West Coast--but it may be something in that family. We'll have to wait for an expert to have a look at this one.

Thanks for the move.
I know that what I’ve read says that we shouldn’t have any Oxycarenus in California, but figured I’d double check. I’ve seen a couple other observations similar to mine that are posted on iNaturalist, as well, and they are all from this year.

Revisiting this submission...
...since another similar specimen has just been posted, this one from Orange County. They both resemble Oxycarenus hyalinipennis, which would probably be of serious concern. Have you shown your images to your local Cooperative Extension office? If not, you might consider doing so.

Notification made
I sent an email to the local extension with pictures today, as I recently visited the spot where I saw these insects before and I found at least 3 mating pairs. They got back to me right away and I’m going to try to get a specimen to them for identification ASAP.

Thanks
Please let us know if they confirm the ID.

Identification so far...
I gave a specimen to the Entomology Laboratory of Los Angeles County (Department of Agricultural Commissioner/Weights & Measures) who then sent it on to the state for ID. It has been identified it to genus level for now: Oxycarenus sp. The person I talked with from the local Ag Commissioner said that the email sent by the state implied that they were sending the specimen on for “molecular identification”. I’ll check back in a couple of weeks to see if we have anything further if I don’t hear anything, but for now it is definitely Oxycarenus.

Identification confirmed
Received word today that further examination/tests have confirmed that this insect is Oxycarenus hyalinipennis. It appears to be the first verified documentation of the species here in CA.
