December Wasp #2 - Polistes annularis

December Wasp #2 - Polistes annularis
Tracys Landing, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, USA
December 3, 2018
Today was wasp day here. They were very active, easy to find and photograph. The weather was warm and sunny. The wasps did not seem interested in the other creatures I was able to see out and about, leaf footed bugs, box elder bugs, lady bugs, a big grasshopper, etc... They were quite actively looking for something in any crevice. I did not see them find what they were looking for. One wasp squished a large portion of its body into a crevice, but then came out. Maybe they were looking for somewhere to winter or something to eat that winters in crevices?

This particular wasp was interested in a shady area with nothing other than the screen to our deck. Maybe it was resting? A similar creature was on a window in the sunshine preening itself. Perhaps both humans and wasps enjoy rare sunny days in December?

I separately posted a different wasp photo with different coloration. Probably one is a male and one a female, but perhaps they are different species.

Moved from ID Request.

This might be a male (the ends of the antennae seem to have a curl to them). Then again, both specimens might be females, one darker than the other. Let's see if the experts chime in.
