Numbers
9 spp. in the genus, all in our area(1)
Identification
Females: terminal abdominal segments modified into a "clamp" to transport prey.
Range
sw US (most spp.); Mexico(1)
Habitat
Arid desert habitats where harvester ants are found.
Food
Adult females secure worker harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex spp.) as food for their offspring, storing the paralyzed ants in a burrow in the soil.
Remarks
I once witnessed a female of this genus attacking harvester ants, right at the nest mound! She would fly close to the ground, single-out a potential victim, land, and attempt to sting it. She would then take off again if other worker ants would come to the aid of their comrade.
