I think this is Brachyopa.

Crossvein r-m is very far back which is a big hint.

Eliminates Xylota, Chalcosyrphus and Tropidia.

Probably not Myolepta which should be tuberculate in male.

Maaaaybe Myolepta, I see spines on the midfemur but can't tell on the forefemur. The facial profile is weird, it looks more Muscoidea even though the rest of the fly is clearly Syrphidae...

Thanks for the suggestion, Kelsey. I'll take a closer look at it with Myolepta in mind. It's such an oddball and the only thing like it in our collection. I've gone back a couple of times now just to convince myself it's actually a syrphid...
