Selandriinae
John was kind enough to send me these and another image full-size. This appears to be Strongylogaster tuberculiceps - host plant likely ferns (per Smith 1969). New for the guide!

Is S. tuberculiceps...
...known (or expected) to occur in Texas? I haven't found any references to records outside of Florida.

No
Not that I can find. But BOLD appears to have a record from the gulf coast of Alabama, and this is East Texas after all, so I wouldn't consider it unlikely.

The other candidate is S. tacita, but it's not normally so extensively red, and extends only as far south as the Appalachians.

I read that tacita...
...sometimes has a red thorax, and can be confused with tuberculiceps. That's why I'm a little hesitant.

Fair enough!
It's certainly safer at the genus level for now
