Swamp Grasshopper - Paroxya clavuliger - male

Melanoplus?

Paroxya clavuliger male
Not a bad guess. It is a close relative of Melanoplus. The usually greenish color of the legs and abdomen, slender form, and in the male the long incurved cerci help to recognize this one.

Thanks
One of my two insect guides does not mention Paroxya at all. Marshall(1) has one picture of a different Paroxya species mixed in with a batch of Melanoplus and I overlooked the different genus.

Orthoptera book
While it is outdated (1920), the best treatment of eastern US Orthoptera (and related insects) is'Orthoptera of North-eastern America' by W. S. Blatchley.

I hope Daniel Otte gets a volume on Spur-throat Grasshoppers published, to go with his previous two volumes on Slant-face and Band-wing Grasshoppers. Spur-throats can be very tough to identify, and the ones in the east give me a headache almost every time I try!

There are also on-line guides to grasshoppers in Florida, Michigan and Wisconsin that will overlap a lot with your area, and might be useful.
