ichneumon wasp

ichneumon wasp
fen farm near Lime Springs, Howard County, Iowa, USA
June 23, 2018
Size: 10 mm
This ichneumon wasp resembles some specimens I saw in the Cylloceria genus, with its black body, red legs and long antennae. I didn't see any Cylloceria collected or photographed from the Midwest though, so it is likely something else.

Banchinae (female)…
Although somewhat similar, in the genus you mention, the female's flagellomeres are highly elongated, especially the middle ones, which is not the case here based on these images. There is, however, a species of Cylloceria that is present in Iowa.

See reference here.

Banchinae
Thanks for taking a look at this wasp and getting the right ID down, Ross! I checked out the Banchinae wasps in your reference and am amazed at the way wasps in different subfamilies can look so similar!
