Fairly sure this came out of a Diprion similis cocoon, but it's taken me this long to ID it and I'm no longer sure.

Yes…
I believe you have this ID'd correctly. The very broad apical yellow bands on tergites 1 and 2 help distinguish this species from the others in the genus. The species has also been recorded in New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec.

Thanks for the confirmation Ross, I appreciate it.
I unfortunately didn't seem to keep the specimen for my collection, or more likely it shattered in my lummox-like hands during pinning way back when I first took the pictures.
Too bad.
