Syrphid - Eupeodes - Female
Tippecanoe County, Indiana, USA
September 15, 2007
Size: about 10 mm
Taken in Lindgren funnel trap.

Unknown syrphid fly. Looks similar to Epist*rophe or Eupe*odes in the guide. Or even Syrp*hus

Moved
Moved from American Hover Fly. Part of a complex of species where the females cannot be reliably differentiated.

Eupeodes americanus
Moved from Epistrophe. I've been sorting my Syrphidae this week, and coming back to this one I've figured it's Eupeodes rather than Epistrophe based on a strongly margined abdomen. Keyed to E. americanus using Fluke 1952.

Difficult to tell
But not Syrphus, they have a dull thorax,
I think this would be Epistrophe sp., a female.
Greetings

Nice shots of the wings!
But a question: What do the three apostrophes in your description mean? I've seen them in other posts, too. Is it an abbreviation?

Some of us use it to keep search engines from recognizing it. It helps reduce the number of false hits when someone searches for something.

Good idea!
I never thought of that!
