snakeroot leafminer? - Acrocercops astericola

snakeroot leafminer? - Acrocercops astericola
Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan, USA
May 6, 2015
This fellow was sitting on my workshop siding.

Moved
Moved from Leucospilapteryx venustella.

I think this is a better match. Compare the distinct white dorsal stripe on this L. venustella I reared from white snakeroot

with this A. astericola I reared from calico aster

thanks again
Dang right. It even has the nice red eye, which doesn't show up as well in this picture I think. I have a wilderness of aster, but New England.

Y'know, I ID'd this one again
Y'know, I ID'd this one against Peterson pp. 38-9. I don't think they have Astercercops genus at all.

Peterson
has a tiny, tiny fraction of the leaf-mining species. It would take a whole book to fit them all, and there are hundreds that don't even have names yet--including this common species that is darn similar to the two in question (its genus hasn't even been described yet):

wow. That is confusing!
wow. That is confusing!

I think they ID'd the picture
I think they ID'd the picture of Astercercops astericola as L. venustella. I don't think the Tower of Pisa will fall down on account though..

I think they have that one right
but the angle makes it hard to see the white. There is an error at the top of p. 38 though, where they say Parectopa robiniella feeds on fleabane and plantain. It feeds on locust! That host info is for Parectopa plantaginisella, and it only actually feeds on fleabane--the person who first reared and named that species initially mistook basal leaves of fleabane for plantain leaves.

I think that's what we have B
I think that's why we have BG and iNat who will hopefully continue to make better than a book - it will expand and people will argue till it's more or less right. A big book with fewer and fewer errors. But still able to admit new species and variations....
