Could you please...
...explain the differences between the two for future reference? They are so similar in appearance (sigh). Appreciate your help!

At least in life the wings ap
At least in life the wings appear more opaque whitish in Stenotabanus but are clear in Leucotabanus. Leucotabanus is also sexually dimorphic with the females being more darkly colored than the males. Males have the eyes touching above the head while females have them smaller and separated. The males are the ones that are likely to be confused with these Stenotabanus since they're quite whitish. Both male and female Nearctic Stenotabanus (subgenus Aegialomyia) are whitish. Out west, there are some Stenotabanus (subgenus Stenotabanus) that are not whitish and have additional colors or patterns. However, as for the east, ones that are whitish, with also opaque whitish wings, and coastal in habitat, should be Stenotabanus (Aegialomyia).
In addition, on the wings, Stenotabanus tend to have a spur vein/stump/appendix on vein R4 that should be absent in Leucotabanus and the frons is wider in the female Stenotabanus than in Leucotabanus.
