Maclaeys Spectre Incubation

Hi Everyone,
I've recently started "incubating" some Maclaeys Spectre stick bugs. So far I haven't found much information regariding this species. My question primarily is what substrates are accepatable for incubation. I've heard that coco coir is good but I cannot find it locallly. Is there any other substate that would be good and inhibit mold? Also what would be a good food source that I could forage locally to feed them in the winter time. I live in North Carolina and it's winter time so I'm very limited as far as what still has leaves in the dead of winter. Any advice on raising these would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

We've had good success putting eggs on moist paper towels in loosely covered dishes. Not too moist of course, the humidity is the tricky factor. Nymphs and adults readily accept blackberry, or any other winter-hardy weed in the Rosaceae family that you can find in vacant lots, roadsides, unmanaged areas. Careful though, what appears to be unmanaged doesn't always mean unsprayed.
Good luck!
