common sawfly - Macrophya succincta

common sawfly - Macrophya succincta
Ludwig Prairie Preserve, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
May 31, 2018
Size: 10 mm
The markings on this common sawfly match up very well with Macrophya succincta, but since it has not been documented from Iowa on BugGuide before, I may be wrong on my guess. It was found on a dry prairie remnant.

common sawfly
Thanks for helping me identify this common sawfly, Ken! It does look like it could be Macrophya succincta as I look at the color patterns.

Macrophya for sure
Keys to Macrophya succincta in Gibson's 1980 revision (which relies heavily on colouration) - therein also noted as present in Iowa.

Macrophya succincta
Thanks for checking on the distribution range of Macrophya succincta, Spencer! Looking at the range map on BugGuide, all the specimens have come from east of the Mississippi River, so at least there is a possibility this sawfly could be M. succincta. I don't have the expertise to say for sure that this is Macrophya succincta though.

Tenthredinidae
Thanks for confirming that this is a common sawfly, Ken! I never know for sure what I've photographed.
