Polyphemus, eggs - Antheraea polyphemus

Polyphemus, eggs - Antheraea polyphemus
100 Acre Wood, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
June 3, 2018
June 2, 2018: collected eggs in the live BL trap
June 11, 2018: larvae emerged, gave them leaves of walnut, oaks2X, maple, hackberry, dogwood, apple, cherry2X
June 17, 2018: casual observation - 3 on red oak, 1 on elm, 5 on maple, 1 on cherry
June 18, 2018: noted 5 larvae died in eggs
June 19, 2018: casual observation - 5 on red oak, 3 on maple. These 2 species continued to be the food favorites.
June 19, 2018: gave some larvae to other folk
July 15, 2018: found the noise I was hearing, it was larvae chewing
July 19, 2018: 2 cocoons and 4 larvae
August 7, 2018: male moth emerged
August 9, 2018: female moth emerged
September 2, 2018: one pupa was so active it nearly vibrated the table so wondered what was going on. Since 2 adults had emerged, I wondered in this one was having difficulty emerging. Suffering as I do from abandoned fawn syndrome, I gently cut off/removed 1/2 of the cocoon. The pupa continued to flail and I realized I had basically killed the pupa by opening it to temperature and moisture variations.

Polyphemus pupa movie
end of October: remaining pupae, including the one with 1/2 cocoon, put into the fridge for winter

Batch rearing.
