This burying beelte seems to have only small patches of orange on its back. Could if be defodiens?

Yes
This is Nicrophorus defodiens. One of the first photos I uploaded to Bugguide was a melanistic version of this species, though this one is a better match. It's a species with a lot of variation I've learned
