Salmincola californiensis - female

Salmincola californiensis - Female
near Sweet Home, Linn County, Oregon, USA
January 15, 2019
Size: 6mm excluding egg sacs
Lateral view. This specimen was collected from an adult steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from the South Santiam River. The arm-like structures are the modified second maxillae which join apically to the plug-like bulla. The bulla is implanted in the host-fish tissue so this parasitic copepod can remain attached.
