Mahogany Jerusalem Cricket - Ammopelmatus

Mahogany Jerusalem Cricket - Ammopelmatus
San Diego, San Diego County, California, USA
December 28, 2007
Size: 50mm
We found this big bug on the road in front of our house around 8pm. The abdomen does not have the banding typical of Jerusalem Crickets, and the claws do not seem "modified for digging" as is the case in Mole Crickets. Do you know what it is?

Mahogany Jerusalem Cricket
This looks like it could be a mahogany Jerusalem cricket. The species belongs in the genus Stenopelmatus Burmeister, 1838 but has not yet been formally described and is generally referred to as Stenopelmatus sp. nov. "mahogany". The species is defined by the absence of the abdominal stripes characteristic of other Stenopelmatus spp. and as far as I'm aware, is currently being studied by David Weissman at the California Academy of Sciences (more info is available here).

Correct!
Dr. Amy Vandergast, author of the project description linked above, concurs that this is a Mahogany Jerusalem Cricket (Stenopelmatus n. sp. "mahogany").
