Size: 10 mm

Nebria lacustris. Taken along the Grand River. A pair of lateral setae on the pronotum (lacking in some species) together with the pale legs and apical elytral sinuation help distinguish this species.

A suggestion for increasing scientific value of future photos

is to attach a few essential taxonomic comments that separates the specimen from sympatric look-alikes, namely N. pallipes in this case. I can't see the necessary setae on lateral pronotum or be sure that a pair of red spots are absent on vertex. Your brief comments about these characters would have reassured me of your identification. Of course most BugGuide image submitters don't key out specimens like you do Brad, and so the struggle to identify insect photos continues.
