Brachinus sp. - Brachinus

Brachinus sp. - Brachinus
Pomona / Stockton University, Atlantic County, New Jersey, USA
September 30, 2010
Size: 9mm
Collected in Malaise trap by W.J. Cromartie.

Keyed almost perfectly to Brachinus sublaevis Chaudoir in Terry Erwin's 1970 reclassification of bombardier beetles:

-Median raised portion of mentum with one or two setae
-Antennal articles 3 and 4, metepisterna, metasternum at sides, and abdominal sterna and terga infuscated
-Mesepisterna not darkly infuscated
-Dorsal surface and epipleura of elytra dull blue
-Proepipleura glabrous

The only thing I was uncertain about was the elytral costae and the extent to which they are visible, but Erwin's description states that the height of the costae varies within population samples.

-A RECLASSIFICATION OF BOMBARDIER BEETLES AND A TAXONOMIC REVISION OF THE NORTH AND MIDDLE AMERICAN SPECIES (CARABIDAE: BRACHINIDA) by Terry Lee Erwin, 1970
