Papaipema, Borer Moth larva - Papaipema arctivorens

Papaipema, Borer Moth larva - Papaipema arctivorens
Plymouth Rock, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
June 28, 2017
It's hard to call this the Northern Burdock Borer since it bores into so many plants.

June 17, 2017: larva in the house (story below), gave it a carrot and confined it
August 2, 2017: pupa
August 25, 2017: eclosed, wings still inflating, released

The story: planting prairie, once a seed collector always a seed collector.
Collected 3 pretty good sized bags of dried fruit/seed heads of Wood betony, Pedicularis canadensis, then spread them out on the garage floor to dry. Was leaving on a trip so re-sacked the heads to take with in hopes of getting some help cleaning the seed, (rubbing hands vigorously together on the heads until the seeds fall out). The bags sat on the enclosed front porch of my sister's house until time to clean the seed (talked my mom (94) and her friend (84) into helping). Went to the porch to bring in the sacks and found a pap larva, then another, and then a couple more, wandering about.
