deer fly - Chrysops cincticornis

deer fly - Chrysops cincticornis
Lake Meyer Park, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
June 26, 2018
Size: 9 mm
There were not very many deer fly species in BugGuide with totally dark abdomens, so I started looking at the eyes of those dark-bodied species that I could find for a possible match. They eyes of this deer fly looked to be a perfect match for Chrysops niger, if eye color is a solid clue to the deer fly's identify.

Chrysops cincticornis
Thanks for determining that this deer fly is Chrysops cincticornis, A.W. I took note that the bright orange hairs on the sides of its thorax are a good clue to its identity.

Chrysops
Thanks for moving this deer fly to Chrysops, Ken! I tried to go to the Chrysops genus and look for an ID request right there, but could only find a place to put new images. Would my images have been looked at there for an ID even if I did not put them in as an ID request?

Actually, every page is an ID Request page...
...since the identification process doesn't stop until it's been taken as far as possible.

Many experts/specialists never look at ID Request. They're poking through the images in their areas of expertise.

As a rule, you should post to your deepest level of certainty (I stress certainty; please don't guess). Avoid "odd" taxonomic levels (i.e., Pentatomorpha or Cimicomorpha), but post to order, family or genus, as long as you're confident to that level. The experts will find the images there.

ID Request is really meant for those who have no idea of what kind of bug they've got.

ID requests
Thanks for clearing up the identification process for me, Ken! From now on, I will try to add photos to the place where I feel confident about their position.
