Tenebroides - Tenebroides laticollis - male

Tenebroides - Tenebroides laticollis - Male
Medford, (~25 miles east of Philadelphia, PA) Burlington County, New Jersey, USA
June 27, 2007
Size: ~8mm
after much fumbling with the keys in Downie and Arnett, I believe this Trogossitidae to be Tenebroides corticalis. The MCZ has the type imaged here. Several couplets in D&A's key to the genus Tenebroides are misleading (at least to me), but the description is a good match, along with the MCZ image. Corrections welcome :)

Moved - Thanks,
Moved from Tenebroides corticalis.

Thank you both. I'll move this one back to the genus level, and see if I can find the characteristics that key to T. laticollis.

Of U.S. Tenebroides
only males of laticollis and americanus have such pits. They differ slightly in shape of pronotum and details of antennal club. This looks like laticollis but without a good shot of the antennal club it's just an educated guess.

This does not
seem to match the rest of the beetles placed here. I agree that it is closer to T. laticollis than to T. corticalis.

T. laticollis (Horn), i believe
based on MCZ types of T. l. and the synonymized T. obscura Horn (the outline and finer puncture of the pronotum seem to be peculiar, although i don't know the formal characters separating the spp.)
